The role of nurses in smoking cessation interventions for patients
A newly published review highlights the critical role nurses play in smoking cessation interventions. Analysis of 53 articles indicated that nurses commonly engaged in smoking assessment with patients, but it was not common for nurses to receive training in smoking cessation interventions. Smoking cessation training will enable nurses to deliver effective smoking cessation interventions with patients.

The ‘Pharmacists delivering nicotine dependence treatment under vaping reforms’ online training module is designed to support pharmacists on the new regulatory framework introduced by the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Act 2024.
Vaping reforms
From 1 July 2024 the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Act 2024 has changed the way vapes can be sourced, supplied and advertised.
From 1 October 2024 pharmacists will be able to supply vapes with a nicotine concentration of 20 mg/mL or less, to people 18 years or over without a prescription subject to certain conditions and state and territory law.
NewsCytisine for cessation
A final decision has been made on proposed amendments to the Poisons Schedule in relation to cytisine. The delegate of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Aged Care (the Delegate) made the decision to create new entries for cytisine in Schedules 3 and 4 and Appendix H. Currently there are no cytisine products on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.
